Christian Dating Rules

So, you're a Christian single in the dating scene but you want to follow God's rules for dating, right? Well, that is definitely easier said than done - especially when it's difficult to figure out what the Christian dating rules are in the first place. And on top of all that, different Christian religions have different dating guidelines.

In an effort to help, I've compiled a list of Christian dating rules taken from the bible and from some of the more common Christian sects. Please remember that some of these (such as making your boundaries clear and having fun) are simply guidelines or suggestions, not rules from the bible.

Date Fellow Christians

Dating fellow Christians is a rule that comes directly from the bible. By dating fellow Christians it's easier for both of you to be strong in your faith. It also makes the prospect of marriage a bit easier to swallow when you both believe in God and have similar views in raising children. And last, having something as big as your relationship with God in common with your partner makes the dating game a little bit easier for the both of you.

Make Your Boundaries Clear and Stick to Your Beliefs

With the flood of emotions that dating and relationships bring, sticking to your boundaries and beliefs can be difficult. Don't put yourself in a place where you could easily or rapidly fall into temptation. For example, if being alone is or becomes a problem, date in groups or date in public places. How we dress for our dates can also determine the level of temptation. Revealing or skin tight clothing can lead to temptation. Not to say we need to be prudes, we just should be smart and careful if we are trying to maintain our purity and save our self for marriage.

Keep God First and Pray for Guidance and Strength

When things are going good it's easy to forget about God or at least put Him on the backburner. No matter what's happening in your life, don't forget that God is always looking out for you. Pray to Him and ask for His guidance and strength, both in the good times and in the bad times. He can get you through anything even when it seems impossible.

Stay Strong in Retaining Your Purity

This Christian dating rule is probably the hardest one for couples to keep. Some "Christians" don't condemn premarital sex but many do. The temptation to have sex before marriage is great so it requires great fortitude to resist the urge to do so. It's perfectly possible to have a healthy, loving relationship while waiting until marriage to have sexual relations. It may be difficult, but it is possible and is blessed by God.

Have fun

Don't forget that God wants you to have fun while dating so make sure you do! Most likely you want to get married some day but don't pressure yourself with a timeline. Have fun and enjoy the dating life. You'll get to know many great people and be able to identify the qualities you want (and don't want) in your future husband or wife.

Perhaps Most Important of All...

Don't be afraid to call it quits if the person is not right for you.  A pastor friend said this, often the wrong person shows up just before the right one does.  Remember, God never closes a door unless He opens a window.  Sometimes we fail to find the right person because we are afriad to call it quits with the wrong one.  Jack Wyrtzen (started Word of Life Ministries) once said, Don't marry the person you think you can live with, marry the person you know you can't live without.

I hope these Christian dating rules will help you out and something you can refer to. If you would like additional tips for dating, check out our general dating tips page or our tips for the first date article.
